Lampwork
Flameworked or lampworked or torchwork beads are one of the earliest forms of beadmaking. Wound glass beads are created by winding molten glass around a steel rod or wire called a mandrel. The mandrel is coated in a clay slip called "bead release". The bead is shaped while still hot by manipulating with graphite, wood, stainless steel or marble tools and paddles, this process is called marvering. It can also be pressed into a graphite mold in its molten state. The bead may have surface decoration using glass stringers while the bead is still hot. Annealing the beads in a kiln reduces the stress in the glass ensuring a strong and break resistant bead.
